FINALLY A MEETING -- Coach Cable may I introduce you to Mr. Rorschach. What do you see?
It's been a long wait, but at long last the NFL will be requiring Raiders coach Tom Cable to undergo an evaluation by a doctor and psychologist to ascertain if further action is required because of possible conditions such as substance abuse or anger management, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, as reported by NBC Sports.
This is the first action to be taken regarding Cable since he fractured the jaw of his defensive assistant coach Randy Hanson and since allegations made by Cable's former wife and ex-girl friend that he physically abused them during their relationships.
Two days ago the National Organization for Women called for Cable's suspension in response to news of his domestic violence.
"Tom Cable's history of violence against women raises a question: Why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?" asked N.O.W. president Terry O'Neill, according to the Washington Post.
"...A man who has admitted battering his wife has no business being a role model for all of us who would like to be able to look up to the head coach of an NFL football team."
I agree with Sean Pendergast, who says the following in the Houston Press blog Hairballs:
"It took Cable's caving in assistant coach Randy Hanson's face in a team meeting to make him somewhat interesting, it took his denying it to make him laughable, and it took allegations of physical abuse from a handful of women he either dated or married going back to the Reagan Administration to make him pathologically creepy and dangerous."
I'm still waiting to hear from other NFL coaches and players who will stand up and speak out, saying they believe such off-the-field violence is wrong. Thank God I didn't swear off chocolate or water until such an event occurs.
