Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio
Hang on to your veil and don't drop your rosary. This story is beyond belief!
A little 9-year-old girl in Brazil has been raped repeatedly by her stepfather ever since she was six.The girl was found last week to be four months pregnant after being taken to the hospital for stomach pains, reports The New York Times. The girl was pregnant with twins. Doctors told her distraught mother that the 80-pound child was too small to carry the twins to full-term. Labor would be dangerous and probably kill her.
EXCEPTIONS TO ABORTION LAW
Although abortion is illegal in Brazil -- the nation with the largest percentage of Catholics in the world -- there are two exceptions to this law. Abortions are allowed in cases of rape or when the mother's life is in danger. Both of these exceptions apply to this case. An emergency abortion was performed.
TOO BAD, SO SAD
Here's the shocker. The Catholic Church does not care that the girl became pregnant due to rape. Too bad. The fact that she would probably die if she gave birth to two babies? Too bad, so sad. Her mother should be willing to sacrifice her child's life.
Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, from Brazil's coastal city Recife, has announced that the Vatican was excommunicating the mother of the local girl -- along with the doctors who performed the procedure. By the way, the accused stepfather, the rapist, is not being excommunicated. The archbishop said that the rapist would not be thrown out of the Church, because although he had allegedly committed "a heinous crime," the Church took the view that "the abortion, the elimination of an innocent life, was more serious," reports the Belfast (UK) Telegraph.
IT'S SHOCKING, IT'S SICKENING
How nauseous are you feeling? That's how I feel. It is literally sickening.
Why would the Vatican prefer punishing the innocent victim and not take any action against the rapist ? By the way, the girl's stepfather is also suspected of abusing the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister, according to BBC News. Although why the rapist wasn't excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church it seemingly doesn't make any sense, it does when you think about it.
PEDOPHILE PRIESTS' BONDING
The many, many pedophile priests in the Catholic Church must feel a bond with the rapist. The poor guy. The Vatican has approved paying the victims of sexual abusing priests millions of dollars, no probably billions, to settle their cases. That way the priests can just keep abusing. It's a good thing the Catholic Church has so much money, from its mostly poor church members. I suppose someone, somewhere in the Vatican has thought about actually spending that money to feed those poor and suffering Catholics around the world and not use it for all those priests -- most of whom never worry about being excommunicated themselves.
No, I am not a Catholic and never was one. But I am infuriated. And so are many Catholics in Brazil, where the case has caused a furor. The Church's response to this rape and abortion has shocked public opinion in Brazil.
ARCHBISHOP SUPERIORITY
"God's laws," said the archbishop, dictate that abortion is a sin and that transgressors are no longer welcome in the Roman Catholic Church, reports TIME Magazine. "They took the life of an innocent," Sobrinho told TIME. "Abortion is much more serious than killing an adult. An adult may or may not be an innocent, but an unborn child is most definitely innocent. Taking that life cannot be ignored."
Apparently, however, taking the life of an innocent 9-year-old child can be ignored by The Church.
"In truth, abortions and unwanted pregnancies are a sad constant in Brazil," writes TIME's Andrew Downie. "Although abortion is illegal, an estimated 1 million women each year have one. The poor are forced into clandestine clinics or take medication, while the better-off are treated by qualified physicians at well-appointed surgeries known to anyone with money and overlooked by colluding authorities."
TRINITY OF ASININITY
In a blog post, "The Trinity of Asininity," Vancouver's Mike Cowie gave this summation: "Doctrine over common sense. Canon over compassion. Ideology over humanity. That's right, it's the Trinity of Asininity."
